Fauré Requiem performance

For lovers of beautiful music, there is an opportunity in Preston
to hear Faure's Requiem Mass setting
this coming

Saturday 10th November
12 noon
at
the Church of the English Martyrs
18 Garstang Road
PR1 1NA

 But not just any performance.
Hear it in its original intended context -
- that of the ancient Latin Mass.

Faure's impetus for composing the work is thought to have been the death of his father in 1885,
and his mother's death two years later, on New Year's Eve1887.
The first version was performed on 16 January 1888
for the funeral of his friend, Joseph Lesoufaché, an architect, at La Madeleine, Paris.

The Madelaine Church in Paris.
The composer said of the work:
"It has been said that my Requiem does not express the fear of death and someone has called it a lullaby of death. But it is thus that I see death: as a happy deliverance, an aspiration towards happiness above, rather than as a painful experience."
"Everything I managed to entertain by way of religious illusion I put into my Requiem, which moreover is dominated from beginning to end by a very human feeling of faith in eternal rest."
In 1924 the Requiem, in its full orchestral version, was performed at Fauré's own funeral.

where the Octavius Choir will sing Faure's Requiem Mass
to the accompaniment of the fine pipe organ in the church.
Entry is free but a collection will be taken up.

Members and friends of the Grand Priory of Great Britain
gathered recently in Lancashire in the historic setting of Samlesbury Hall
to prepare new members for reception into the Order.

We were honoured once again with the presence of our Grand Master from the Czech Republic,
HE Jan Count Dobrzenský z Dobrzenicz
and also, as the representative of Her Majesty the Queen in the County,
the Deputy Lord Lieutenant of Lancashire, Col. Alan Jolley
and his wife, Mary.

As well as the five new members preparing to be received into the Order,
there were also four young men being received as Esquires.

The Chaplain General For Great Britain leads the Vigil Service.

We were delighted to welcome so many guests and members.

The Grand Master.

 The Esquires make their promises.

Finally, after the Service, the postulants hear the Marshal instruct them as soldiers of Christ,
our unseen Captain.

OUR BATTLE is with the sword.
It is a battle not against flesh and blood, but against the evils of this world,
and against the temptations of the prince of darkness.

The Marshal inverts the sword, gripping its blade so that the Cross-shaped hilt is exposed and says :

This battleis under the sign of the Cross. May no other battle divide mankind.

Returning the sword to its up-right position, he says;
Postulants, behold the sword! Remember always its double significance of both Cross and Arms. Use it to defend what is right and good, and to fight what is wrong and evil, to the greater glory of God, the benefit of those in need, the honour of the Order, and the furthering of your own salvation!

High Mass for the Investiture

As always with an Investiture, we celebrated Mass to call down God's grace upon us and our work.
Most especially on our new members, our new Grand Prior and those being promoted.
This year it was the Feast of St Michael the Archangel.
As the leader of the Heavenly armies, a very appropriate Feast  for the Order.

Mass was celebrated in the church of St Thomas and the English Martyrs in Preston.

Huge thanks go to the Canons of the Institute of Christ the King,
who administer the church there as a shrine and pilgrimage site
honouring the English Martyrs,
who gave their lives for the Faith.

The music was performed with great aplomb by the Octavius Singers
and Mr David Scott-Thomas at the fine organ in the church.
Celebrating the Traditional Form of the Roman Rite.

The Sister Adorers of the Royal Heart of Jesus from Preston also sang the chant.
It was absolutely beautiful.

The stunning church was designed by E.W. Pugin and completed in 1888.

English Martyrs Church is built on the site of an area that used to be called Gallows Hill. It received that name after theBattle of Prestonof the Jacobite rising of 1715.After the government overcame the rebel army, it was on Gallows Hill that the rebel prisoners were executed. On the 5 January 1715, it was recorded that sixteen rebels 'were hanged upon Gallows Hill, for high treason and conspiracy.'

Thank you also to Deacon Ryan from the USA
and the altar servers who were drawn from St Catherine's parish
from the Institute parishes in Preston
and from friends of the Order.

Fr Leo Daley (Archdiocese of Liverpool) preached the sermon.

Our new Esquires took part,
assisting as sidesmen, taking up the collection and carrying the banners.

Roman Pilgrimage

A number of members of the Grand Priory of Great Britain took part in a pilgrimage to Rome recently, as part of a larger group from the parish of the Chaplain General for Great Britain. Fifty one of us altogether. One of the highlights was Mass in St Peter's Basilica, very early in the morning, as you can see from the photograph above. Fr Simon celebrated Mass for the pilgrims at the altar of St Margaret Mary, the great devotee of the Sacred Heart of Jesus.

Our Grand Prior, H E Chev. Anthony Dickinson read the Epistle.

Singing the Salve Regina at the end of Mass.

Among those on the pilgrimage, four of our new Esquires, who are all students at Chavagnes International College, where Order Chaplain Fr Mark Lawler has the care of souls.

Our other venue for Mass was right next to our hotel in the gem of a church, San Salvatore. It is part of the Pallotine Fathers House and the body of St Vincent Pallotti is enshrined under the high altar in a "basilica" arrangement. We were made very welcome there and celebrated Mass each morning with ease.

There were four Chaplains from the Grand Priory of Great Britain,
assisted at Mass by some of our new Esquires as servers.

Three members of the Grand Priory of Great Britain joined our confreres and consouers in France for an historic meeting, as the Bishop of Orléans recognized the Order as an Association of the Faithful in his Diocese.

An Investiture was held in the Polish Church of Saint Joseph, in the shadow of Orléans Cathedral, in the presence of HRH. Prince Charles-Philippe d' Orléans on Friday 14th December, with Mass the next day in nearby Boigny celebrated by the Bishop of Orléans.

On the Saturday, members and friends gathered in the Church of St Pierre es Liens in Boigny, part of the first lands bequested to the Order after we left the Holy Land. The Bishop of Orléans, Mgr Jaccques Blaquart celebrated the Mass, along with French Chaplains, in the historic church, which bears the St Lazarus cross in many of its decorations.

Our Carol Concert this year took place last Saturday
at the Chaplain General's church of
St Catherine Labouré in Lancashire.

As ever, the Octavius Choir put on a splendid performance.

It's interesting to look back and see how the evening has grown over the years. The second year we arranged the concert can be seen here in 2012
with just four singers.

Though the generosity of parishioners and benefactors has remained consistent and unwavering.

This year, raising £1,500.

Bringing the total for these concerts to £31,500.

Thank you everyone!

The church was packed this year. Pretty much every seat taken.
A testimony to the quality of the music.

A big THANK YOU to the members of "Octavius",
who give their time and talents freely
to support the Order's good work.

Fr Mark Lawler reads Chestereton's poem
"Gloria in Profundis"

Glory to God in the Lowest
The spout of the stars in spate-
Where thunderbolt thinks to be slowest
And the lightning fears to be late:
As men dive for sunken gem
Pursuing, we hunt and hound it,
The fallen star has found it
In the cavern of Bethlehem.

Members of the Coir also performed pieces with a Christmas message, including:

"Voices in the Mist" by Alfred Lord Tennyson

and

"King John's Christmas" by A A Milne

The singers were accompanied on organ, piano and on violin this year!

Davis Scott-Thomas is the is the Musical Director of Octavius,
who generally sing liturgical music in its proper setting -
that of liturgical worship.

Two Chaplains in wrapt attention!

Caught in mid-flow, our Grand Prior, Anthony Dickinson sings with Octavius and it is under his inspiration that the Concert has flourished over the past eight years.

The Chaplain General offers a vote of thanks
- and appeals for generosity!

After the Concert, we crowded in for a good helping of mulled wine and mince pies.

Our focus for the evening is SUROL
a charity in Sri Lanka, whose Patron is Malcolm, Cardinal Ranjith.
They work assisting all those, of any faith or background, who are affected by leprosy.

Malcolm Cardinal Ranjith is presented with the Order of Merit of St Lazarus in 2014.

And with thanks to all those who contributed in any way,
a reminder of those who benefit from your generosity.

Investiture for 2019

The Grand Prior of Great Britain, His Excellency Anthony Dickinson, cordially invites all members of the noble Order, Companions, their families and guests to meet in the County of Lancashire on 12th and 13th July 2019 for the Annual Investiture of new members and the granting of promotions.

On the Friday we will gather for prayer in the Church of St John the Evangelist, Burscough. Following the Vigil the Grand Prior will host a Charity Dinner in the Orangery at Briar’s Hall.

On Saturday we gather once again at the Church of St John the Evangelist for Solemn High Mass celebrated by the Chaplain General and for the Investiture.

Mass is followed by a Reception  on the lawns of Burscough House.

Guests are most welcome to attend any and all events. Members should receive the official details very shortly. Non-members are most welcome to attend. Please contact any member of the Order.

The Church was built in 1793 and partly disguised with false windows making it look like a grand Manor House. Hence the presbytery’s designation as “Burscough Hall”. This was to keep a low profile at a time when Catholicism was still censured by law. It was extended with a bell tower and porch in the early twentieth century. Much of the land as you drive up the private Road of Chapel Lane once belonged to the church, which still includes a school, cemetery and fields stretching down to Abbey Brook.

There has been a house on the site since the 16th century but the present building dates mainly from a rebuilding of 1745 for the Ashton family.  It consists of a three storey three bay house with lower and later wings to either side; the larger right-hand wing and the porch and bay window on the end elevation to the left represent the extensions made for John Ainscough after he bought the estate in 1902.  The house has been a hotel since 1970. Beautifully located in 5 acres of mature gardens and woodland. It offers olden charm with modern comfort and service.

Sad news that Fr Milan Norbert Badal died yesterday aged just 62. A  Chaplain to the Order, he was also personal secretary to our Chaplain General, the Cardinal Archbishop of Prague, Dominika Duka, assisting particularly with media related issues.

Between 2003 and 2009, Milan Badal served as vice-president of the Czech television Council. Between 2015 and 2016 he was deputy chairman Of the Czech Radio Council.
From 1996 to 2003 he served as editor-In-chief of the Catholic weekly newspaper.

He was Born in the town of Opočno in eastern Bohemia, 15. August 1956. He graduated from the philosophical Faculty of Charles University in Prague.

He was parish priest to a parish on the outskirts of Prague at Hostivice.

He was a writer, publishing mainly with Sursum Publishing and was a contributor to the Christian Internet magazine Christnet.cz. He also published a recipe book of traditional Czech dishes.

Fr Milan last visited the UK on holiday in 2016, where the Chaplin Fr Simon Henry got him to try a pint of good northern bitter. The photo above shows that this was not a successful experiment.

He was a most kind and gentle priest.
